Roots of Empathy

Scoil Íosagáin is delighted that Roots of Empathy has returned to our school. Roots of Empathy is an evidence-based programme delivered in primary school classrooms which has shown a significant effect in raising social-emotional competence and increasing empathy. At the heart of the programme is a baby and parent who visit the classroom every three weeks during the school year.

In this photo, our baby teacher is Tom. Tom and his Mum Majella had their first visit to 5th class with Jim, our trained Roots of Empathy instructor. They will visit the school every three weeks. The children will observe Tom's development and learn to label the baby's feelings. The baby is the ‘teacher’ in this experiential learning, while the instructor helps the children identify and reflect on their own feelings and the feelings of others. This is a wonderful opportunity for our children and we really appreciate that we have a new baby teacher in Scoil Íosagáin!!
